The Auburn Fullpipe Is Getting Flushed

All of the downpours & heavy rain that we've having over the last few weeks made me want to go out and check on how the Auburn Fullpipe was looking. When the pipe is "High & Dry" it is a pretty cool spot to ride. This place has been sessioned by many different groups, on both boards & bikes from way back in the early 80's. I haven't been out there myself in like 10 or 12 years. The pipe itself is kind of sketchy to get to... OK, VERY SKETCHY TO GET TO!

It is located at the bottom of a super steep spillway bowl & the only way to get down to it is to rappel down on ropes (or extension cords like we had to do one time) Pretty much just picture an enormous, 80 foot tall toilet bowl; that is the basic layout of the place. Supposedly while some guys were down in the pipe sessioning it one time, somebody pulled up the rope and they were stuck down there! The walls of the spillway were WAY too steep to climb up unaided. They had to walk all the way to the other end where the pipe drains out on the side of a cliff; a 1 or 2 mile walk in the dark, underground!

Even in the middle of Summer when the water level is low, there is still usually a little trickle of water that flows through the pipe. Bags of kitty litter can be used to make a little dam that will stop the water for a little while though, making it dry enough to ride. But check out the video. After all of the heavy rain that we have gotten recently, that place is currently in overflow mode! A DUMP TRUCK full of kitty litter ain't gonna stop THAT vortex of turbulence that's flowing through the pipe right now! -TEO
