Avalanche kills Worcester man

The adventurous life of Jesse L. Brigham, 27, ended Friday when he was buried in an avalanche in Vail, Colo., while backcountry snowboarding outside the Vail Resorts ski area.

Mr. Brigham, who divided his time in the past year among Worcester, Colorado and Argentina, was skiing with two friends in the popular East Vail Chutes area of White River National Forest when the avalanche occurred. All three were wearing locator beacons, and his companions found him and began CPR. They also called the Vail Mountain Ski Patrol, which sent a team. Mr. Brigham was buried for 10 to 20 minutes, according to The Associated Press. He was pronounced dead shortly after the ski patrol arrived, according to the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office.

Mr. Brigham was working as a handyman at a Colorado hotel. He was not married and did not have children. For the last three years, he had gone to Colorado to snowboard. Last year, he followed that up with a long snowboarding trip to Argentina before returning to Worcester, where he lived with his father and sister, Chester and Allison Brigham. He also leaves his mother, Susan Tivnan of Sterling.
